Septic Pumping

Septic System Pumping in South Florida

Septic System Installation — Back of a Blue Septic Tank in Hollywood, FL
Septic systems are designed to handle human waste, toilet paper, and water from plumbing fixtures such as toilets, baths and sinks. Household cleaners, detergents and bleach will not damage your system if used sparingly. Do not pour oil, cooking grease, paint or medication into your plumbing system. This can inhibit the bacteria within you tank that help break down solid waste. Other items that can be harmful to your system are: diapers, sanitary napkins, plastic bags, and cigarettes. These items take up space in your septic tank, which will send solids through the drain field. A garbage disposal can be used if your septic system was designed for it, if so, you should have your tank pumped more frequently.

Overloading Your Septic System

Your septic system is designed to handle a measured volume of water. If you consistently overload your septic system you may cause premature failure. The most frequent source of overloads is leaking fixtures. This could amount to hundreds of gallons of water being added to your septic tank, which could alter the bacteria.

Why Pump Your Septic Tank?

When too much solid material accumulates in your tank, it will start to overflow out of the tank and into the drain field with the normal liquid. When solids clog the drain field, this is the most common cause for drain field failure. The bacteria that thrives in septic tanks are called, “anaerobic bacteria,” because they do not need oxygen to survive. These bacteria is essential to the functioning of a septic system, because they help break down solids. When a system is overloaded or neglected, they may require a bacteria additive to help balance the system. This can vary upon a client's usage.
